The Banyan tree

Printmaking |  Editorial design

The Banyan tree is a book that brings together woodcut prints and black-and-white photographs of tree roots found in Gulangyu island.

These images accompany a short story reflecting on the fall of a 180-year-old banyan tree during a storm on July 9th, 2025. As I photographed it two days before its fall, this led me to see the roots as our own impermanence, where strength and fragility are inseparably intertwined.

It felt strange to take what would become the last photograph of such an old tree. Cards and bookmarks were later designed using the artworks developed for the book.
