Pataicola Photobooks

Editorial design | Photography

Fugar is a photobook that documents my journey through the streets of Beijing, chasing fleeting silhouettes in times of Covid uncertainty. Designed as part of Pataicola Art and Design Lab, it was presented alongside other independent publications at local book fairs in Beijing and Hangzhou in 2023.

Among these other books, there was Traces, a photographic collection of visual textures found while walking on a street area of Chaoyanglu, and Urban Visa, a zine that explores Beijing's manholes as grid patterns and stamps in a fictional urban passport.

Whether a shadow, a pattern, or a trace, these three books reveal how the most insignificant detail can become a source of wonder, discovered in the very street one walks every day, as if some difference could be found in the monotone, repetitive routine.

Beijing's shadow hunter

Photography | Video | Sound

Inspired by Saul Leister, my photography captures street scenes characterised by strong contrasts, silhouettes, clean compositions, and a dark aesthetic that I often associate to a jazz music tone.

Some of the good work that I did, I did right in my own neighborhood. The street is like a ballet. You never know what is going to happen. –Saul Leister

Selected photographs

Lost in Calmness (2022): A short experimental video on how street sounds and colours express one's feelings.

Morning sounds (2022): Three videos on representative sounds of my mornings at home before leaving for work.
